Willard Marshall gave a lot of credit for his National League Most Valuable Player Award to the Brooklyn hitting coach. "It was his theory of hitting that turned me into a better hitter this season," he said to the press today.

The 35-year-old pro batted .313 in 1956 with a .461 on-base percentage while collecting 144 hits, 17 doubles, no triples, 47 home runs and 139 runs batted in.

Friday, October 12th, 1956: Brooklyn's Kucks Elbows His Way to NL Award
To be a young man playing professional baseball is enough for most 23-year-olds.
To play it well is even better.
Well, Johnny Kucks of the Brooklyn Dodgers took it to an even higher level today, when the National League named him the Cy Young Award winner for the 1956 campaign.

He put together a 24-10 record in 37 starts with 114 strikeouts in 311 innings and a 3.15 ERA.

The SION Baseball Writers Association will present Kucks his trophy at the annual gathering this weekend.
