| Breaking News | | Thursday, September 13th, 1956: New York (N)'s Noren Goes Ballistic with 5 Hits Irv Noren exploded for a barrage of base hits today at Polo Grounds IV. The New York (N) first baseman had a field day in the 6-5 triumph over the Brooklyn Dodgers, finishing up with a 5-7 day and a spot in the league record book.
"My hitting philosophy is pretty simple," he said. "I focus just to see the ball and try to get a good pitch."
Well, Noren must have focused at least 5 times and apparently got some good pitches, too. It was one of his best days ever with the bat.
I. Noren grounded out in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 6th, flied out in the 9th, singled in the 12th and singled in the 14th.
This season in 140 games, Noren has hit at a .278 clip with 141 hits, 23 home runs, 72 RBIs and 91 runs scored. | | Tuesday, September 11th, 1956: Brooklyn Triumphs Over Giants in Shutout Before the game Jim Owens liked his chances and his instincts proved to be right. In a superb outing the Dodgers pitcher whitewashed the New York (N) Giants 3-0.
Owens said in the clubhouse afterward, "I just had a feeling it was going to be my day. My control was awesome. I could throw my curveball even when I was behind in the count."
The Brooklyn starter held New York (N) scoreless, giving up 1 hit while registering 4 strikeouts and issuing 3 walks.
"We didn't have very many good at-bats," the Giants manager said in his postgame interview.
"When that happens, you usually lose."
This year Owens has made 22 starts, thrown 183.1 innings, fanned 65 batters and walked 76. His won-lost record is 6-9 with a 3.78 ERA. | | Tuesday, September 11th, 1956: 1B Noren Thrilled to Remain in New York (N) Team officials triumphantly announced that the Giants and superstar first baseman Irv Noren have closed a deal that keeps the 31-year-old in a New York (N) uniform for another 6 years.
