"That was one of my best outings," said Dean Stone. "I was worried a lot in the bullpen. My ball wasn't quite right. Luckily, it can be two different worlds -- the bullpen and the game. Once I stepped on the field, it all fell into place."
It was an impressive start for the Cubs hurler. He blanked the IronPigs 4-0 on a strong 1-hitter while ringing up 7 strikeouts and doling out 1 walk.

 | Saturday, August 17th, 1957: McCormick Pitches Gem against Lehigh Valley
Mike McCormick put a hex on Lehigh Valley in a sparkling 7-0 shutout performance, mesmerizing them on a 2-hit gem.
"I feel good physically," he said. "Everything's comfortable. You should pitch well when that's the case."
It was anything but comfortable for Lehigh Valley.
"McCormick used his changeup very well, very effectively," the opposing manager said. "He threw it in hitter's counts."
The Memphis Redbirds hurler fanned 5 and walked 2.
This season McCormick has worked 172.2 innings with 74 strikeouts en route to a 13-5 record and a 2.14 ERA. |
| Tuesday, August 13th, 1957: Grizzlies Blanked by Burnette
It was a long day at the plate for the Fresno Grizzlies. They never did figure out Wally Burnette and were shut out 2-0. The Lehigh Valley hurler baffled them the entire game, yielding no runs and 3 hits in a very well-pitched outing. Burnette also totaled 4 strikeouts and 1 walk in the game.
This season Burnette has gone 17-10 with an ERA of 2.57, posting 124 strikeouts in 241.2 innings. |
