| Breaking News | | Tuesday, August 20th, 1957: Novotney Bashes 5 Base Hits 5 times is a charm -- at least in the world of baseball. When a player gets 5 or more hits in a game, he is honored in the record book and the latest honoree is Rube Novotney of the Indianapolis Indians.
He tore up the Louisville Bats to the tune of 5 hits in 5 at-bats in the Indianapolis 7-5 win today at Hunters Ballpark.
"Novotney was a tough out today," the Louisville manager said to the press in the postgame interview. "He hit some very good pitches with that quick bat of his. Not an easy out, that's for sure."
R. Novotney singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit a two-run single in the 4th, singled in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off D. Romberger in the 8th.
A look at his 1957 stats shows Novotney with a .252 average, 2 home runs, 25 RBIs and 63 runs scored. He has played in 108 games. | | Tuesday, August 13th, 1957: McCormick Bewilders Indians in Shutout In an outstanding mound performance, Mike McCormick of the Memphis Redbirds scuttled the Indianapolis Indians 7-0 on a 1-hit shutout, ringing up 5 strikeouts and giving up 1 walk.
"He's got great stuff and good movement," the Indianapolis manager said after the game.
"He threw a lot of breaking balls. He made adjustments. We just couldn't figure him out today."
This season in 24 starts Mike McCormick has a record of 12-5 with 69 strikeouts in 163.2 innings and a 2.25 ERA. | | Monday, August 12th, 1957: Fernandez 5-7 Against Indians The Redbirds were defeated 6-5 today at Field of the Blue Oxen by the Indians, but you can't say Chico Fernandez didn't give it his best try. The Redbirds shortstop came to the plate 7 times and collected 5 hits. It was a good day for Fernandez and a tough day for Memphis.
"I just go up there and swing away and hope it hits the barrel of the bat," he said. "There really isn't any plan."
No plan or not, Fernandez delivered today...5-7 is outstanding in any league.
C. Fernandez doubled in the 1st, singled in the 4th, doubled in the 6th, grounded out in the 8th, singled in the 9th, singled in the 12th and flied out in the 14th.
Fernandez is batting .277 in 1957 with 10 home runs, 64 RBIs and 72 runs scored. He has 124 hits in 447 at-bats. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 59-71, .454 PCT | | Position in Division | 6th, 28.0 GB | | Record at home | 31-34, .477 PCT | | Record on the road | 28-37, .431 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 9-9, .500 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 27-15, .643 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 11-19, .367 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 48-52, .480 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 7-3, .700 PCT | | Record in April | 6-18, .250 PCT | | Record in May | 13-15, .464 PCT | | Record in June | 17-11, .607 PCT | | Record in July | 8-19, .296 PCT | | Record in August | 15-8, .652 PCT |
