Saturday, November 24th, 1956: Cincinnati Comes to Terms with Banta
Team insiders were tight-lipped prior to today's deal that brought 31-year-old reliever Jack Banta to Cincinnati.

Banta is considered one of the league's A-list players, and certainly will enhance any chances the Reds have to win a playoff spot this year.

Banta has pitched in 141 games in his career, posting 5 saves, 273 strikeouts and a record of 17 victories and 27 losses. His lifetime ERA stands at 4.72.
Thursday, October 11th, 1956: NL's Top Rookie Announced
Jackie Brandt made quite a name for himself and his lethal bat in his rookie year. The Cincinnati left fielder brought home the 1956 Rookie of the Year Award today in recognition of his extraordinary rookie campaign.

Brandt played in 142 games, batted .305, collected 177 hits in 581 at-bats, 25 home runs, 116 RBIs, 81 runs scored, 27 walks and compiled a .337 OBP.

All of the league award winners will be recognized this weekend at the SBWA annual dinner.
Saturday, September 8th, 1956: Pittsburgh Blanked by Cincinnati
"Good pitching beats good hitting" is an old baseball adage.

Well, good pitching also beats bad batting.

In his postgame interview the Pittsburgh manager said, "Bob Lemon made us look real bad today. He was outstanding. He was down in the zone with all his pitches. Everything was sinking."

Lemon had 10 strikeouts, no walks and allowed only 5 hits as the Cincinnati Reds whitewashed the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0.

Thus far this season, Lemon has worked 227.2 innings with 136 strikeouts en route to a 11-13 record and a 4.23 ERA.
