| Breaking News | | Monday, June 24th, 1957: Hope Dims for Unknown's Recovery From the moment it happened, it was clear that Joe Unknown's injury was serious. The Barons starting pitcher suffered a fractured elbow while throwing a pitch. For safety's sake, Unknown was carted off the field in a stretcher. The initial diagnosis was bad and the follow-up assessment at the hospital was even more grim: Unknown's career is over.
| | Monday, June 10th, 1957: Harrell Pounds AL Pitchers This Week Billy Harrell of the Birmingham Barons had a spectacular week and today was voted the Player of the Week by the AA AL.
For the week Harrell batted .591 (13-22) with no home runs and 3 RBIs.
This year Harrell is batting .340 with 3 home runs and 30 RBIs. | | Saturday, April 27th, 1957: Baysox Perkowski No-Hits Barons The Bowie Baysox were only hoping for a solid outing from Harry Perkowski, instead the 34-year-old pitcher tossed a no-hitter against the Birmingham Barons.
Using a brilliant mix of offspeed pitches and fastballs, Perkowski kept the Birmingham hitters off balance all game long in the 5-0 victory at Volts Ballpark. The Bowie hurler fanned 0 and walked 1 in his record-making performance.
"I felt pretty good throughout the game," he said after his spectacular outing for the Baysox. "As I was going into the ninth inning, I was not nervous. I knew I had a chance to do something special."
That something special got his name in the league record books.
Checking out his stats for the season, Perkowski has racked up 1 win and 3 losses in 6 starts, 4.62 ERA and struck out 7 batters in 39 innings. | | | Pitching Staff | | Role | Throws | Pitcher | W | L | SV | ERA | | | Closer | L | Fred Kipp | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0.00 | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 59-61, .492 PCT | | Position in Division | 5th, 20.0 GB | | Record at home | 31-29, .517 PCT | | Record on the road | 28-32, .467 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 6-3, .667 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 16-19, .457 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 19-18, .514 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 40-43, .482 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 2-8, .200 PCT | | Record in April | 12-11, .522 PCT | | Record in May | 16-12, .571 PCT | | Record in June | 12-15, .444 PCT | | Record in July | 14-12, .538 PCT | | Record in August | 5-11, .313 PCT |
