| Breaking News | | Wednesday, August 14th, 1957: Witt Guns Down Rock Cats In an impressive outing, George Witt whitewashed the New Britain Rock Cats 2-0.
"I'm getting a lot more downward movement instead of side to side. That side-to-side stuff can get hit a long way," said Witt, who is throwing with more of an overhand motion.
"It's not rocket science. It was just a little adjustment, but that's all it took."
The Akron hurler held New Britain scoreless, allowed 3 hits, chalked up 5 strikeouts and yielded 2 walks.
So far this year Witt has made 22 starts, tossed 165 innings, struck out 42 batters and walked 60. His record is 13-6 with a 2.35 ERA and he has limited opposing teams to a .240 batting average. | | Monday, July 22nd, 1957: Thunder Hitless Against Estock The New Britain Rock Cats relied on no-hit stuff from George Estock to defeat the Trenton Thunder 9-0 at Ballpark of New Richmond.
"It's quite a thrill," a candid Estock told the media afterward, "This is a top-notch league. A no-hitter against any team in the league is something special. I can't believe I did it."
To get his name logged in the records, he stopped Trenton cold, with no hits, surrendering 1 walk and fanning 1 batters, facing only 29 batters.
Estock told SION in a postgame interview, "Games like this are something special. They don't come around very often, if ever. I knew from the fifth inning that I had a no-hitter working. I just tried to get it out of my mind, but you just can't. They have too many scoreboards in the park. They are everywhere you look."
In a jovial mood, his manager kiddingly told the reporters, "He definitely made it easy for me today. I didn't have any great decisions to make like I usually have to do. Didn't even have to come up with a pinchhitter. I love it when my pitchers pitch a no-hitter."
Year to date Estock shows a 9-7 record, 21 starts, 152.1 innings, 39 strikeouts and a 2.72 ERA. | | Sunday, July 7th, 1957: Rock Cats Win, Shut Out Akron Billy Hoeft allowed 4 hits while giving up 5 walks and collecting 3 strikeouts as New Britain blanked Akron 3-0.
In the postgame interview Hoeft said, "I'm trying to keep the ball down and let guys put it in play. It worked for me today."
This season to date, Hoeft has fashioned a 8-5 mark and 2.29 ERA in 145.2 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .196 against him and he has logged 41 strikeouts. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | P Billy Hoeft | strained back muscle | one week | Not on DL | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 66-54, .550 PCT | | Position in Division | 2nd, 13.0 GB | | Record at home | 35-25, .583 PCT | | Record on the road | 31-29, .517 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 13-8, .619 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 24-19, .558 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 17-12, .586 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 49-42, .538 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 5-5, .500 PCT | | Record in April | 16-9, .640 PCT | | Record in May | 12-14, .462 PCT | | Record in June | 15-13, .536 PCT | | Record in July | 14-11, .560 PCT | | Record in August | 9-7, .563 PCT |
