Thursday, August 1st, 1957: AL Selects Hartung July's #1 Pitcher
In July Stockton starter Clint Hartung mystified A AL hitters and carried off the Pitcher of the Month honors by chalking up a 4-1 record in 6 starts.

The 34-year-old Hartung added 15 strikeouts in 51 innings and 17 walks to his season record and compiled a 0.88 ERA. Opposing batters hit .205 against him.

This year Hartung has a 12-4 record with a 1.99 ERA in 19 starts.
Friday, July 12th, 1957: Hartung Baffles Lancaster
"I hope we miss him next time," the Lancaster manager said. "Hartung certainly pitched a strong game against us today. He was in a groove, throwing everything for strikes. Throwing hard. Changing speeds."

The Stockton starter tamed the Lancaster JetHawks 2-0 with a 4-hit shutout, finishing the game with 2 strikeouts and 1 walk in a sharp outing.

"I enjoy facing a team like that where I can get an out on one, two or three pitches," Hartung said. "It gives me a chance to be a lot more aggressive."

In 14 starts this year Hartung has fashioned a 9-3 record and a 2.33 ERA.
Tuesday, June 11th, 1957: Stockton Blanks Yankees, McDevitt at His Best
"That's one thing that has never changed in this game -- pitching can control hitting," the Ports manager told reporters after today's game.

The Yankees ran into a buzzsaw as Danny McDevitt cut them down to size 5-0 with a 4-hit shutout.

His skipper added, "He knows exactly what he's doing. He's not going to throw you a good pitch until you make him throw one."

In the complete game whitewash the Stockton hurler doled out 4 walks and registered 3 strikeouts.

In the postgame press conference his catcher said, "Danny goes out there and just goes about his business. I don't think he gets too concerned about what's going on. You can call any pitch and you know where he's going to be."

McDevitt also got some praise from the Tampa manager.

"He really kept us in check today. Everything looked to be moving. Seemed like the pitch was right down the middle and it went over down and away... we took some pathetic swings."

In the current season in 13 starts, Danny McDevitt has a record of 8-4 with 86 strikeouts in 105 innings and a 2.49 ERA.
