| Breaking News | | Saturday, August 24th, 1957: Hillcats Win A Championship The Lynchburg faithful were cheering in the streets and the Winston-Salem fans were crying in their beer -- The Hillcats won the A Championship. They clinched it by knocking off the Warthogs 6-1 to take their 2nd CCBL Single A crown. Lynchburg took the series 3-1.
"This club never gave up all year long. They believed they could win the title and they did," the victorious skipper told the press.
"We just didn't play well enough to win," the Warthogs manager lamented, "We just didn't make the big plays like they did."
On the way to the A Championship title Lynchburg compiled a 76-44 won-loss record and finished first in the A NL. | | Thursday, August 1st, 1957: Bell - July's Top Starter The top pitcher this past month in the A NL was Bill Bell of the Lynchburg Hillcats. He really bewildered league hitters, finishing July with an excellent 4-1 record and 1.98 ERA.
The Hillcats hurler made 5 starts and surrendered 25 hits in 36.1 innings. He struck out 12 and walked 12.
In 1957 Bell has a 13-3 record with a 2.32 ERA in 23 starts. | | Saturday, June 8th, 1957: Hersh on Fire, 5-5 Against Myrtle Beach 5 times is a charm -- at least in the world of baseball. When a player gets 5 or more hits in a game, he is honored in the record book. The latest honoree is Earl Hersh of the Lynchburg Hillcats.
Today he beat up their pitching to the tune of 5 hits in 5 at-bats, but it was the Myrtle Beach Pelicans that salvaged a 19-12 victory at Milton-Freewater Grounds.
"Hersh was a tough out today," the Myrtle Beach manager said to the press in the postgame interview. "He hit some very good pitches with that quick bat of his. Not an easy out, that's for sure. I'm just glad we held everybody else in check and got the win."
Speaking to the SION writers, Hersh added, "It was a real good day for me individually, but not a good one for the team. No loss is a good one."
E. Hersh singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI triple in the 6th, hit a solo-shot off J. Unknown in the 8th and hit a GRAND SLAM off J. Unknown in the 9th.
In this current campaign Hersh is hitting at a .241 clip with 5 home runs and 35 RBIs. | | | Pitching Staff | | Role | Throws | Pitcher | W | L | SV | ERA | | | Starter | R | Bill Bell | 13 | 5 | 0 | 2.65 | | | Starter | R | Bob Grim | 11 | 6 | 0 | 2.58 | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 76-44, .633 PCT | | Position in Division | 1st, - GB | | Record at home | 38-22, .633 PCT | | Record on the road | 38-22, .633 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 7-5, .583 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 20-15, .571 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 19-14, .576 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 57-30, .655 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 6-4, .600 PCT | | Record in April | 14-8, .636 PCT | | Record in May | 20-7, .741 PCT | | Record in June | 17-12, .586 PCT | | Record in July | 16-10, .615 PCT | | Record in August | 9-7, .563 PCT |
