Saturday, October 13th, 1956: Super Season, Mathews Wins Most Valuable Player Award
Eddie Mathews slapped, slashed and slugged the baseball all over American League ballparks to pull in a majority of the votes for the Most Valuable Player Award for 1956.

The third baseman for Washington put up a .338 average as he pounded out 175 hits, 15 doubles, 1 triple, 53 home runs, 145 RBIs and scored 115 runs.

For being named the AL's best batter Mathews will be honored at the SION Baseball Writers awards banquet this weekend.
Friday, October 12th, 1956: AL Names Larsen Cy Young Award Winner
This past season Washington starter Don Larsen mystified and confused hitters most of the time. In 34 starts he cruised to a 24-7 won-lost record and the 1956 American League Cy Young Award.

27-year-old Larsen added 170 strikeouts in 272.2 innings and 120 walks to his season record and compiled a solid 3.37 ERA. Opponents only hit .252 against him.

All of the award-winning players will be honored this weekend at the SBWA annual awards dinner.
Friday, September 28th, 1956: Washington Sweeps Brooklyn for CCBL Title
The celebrations have begun. The streets are alive with people and the confetti is flying. The Washington Senators have done it -- they won the 1956 World Championship. The Senators defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers 14-3 at Griffith Stadium I to take the title. Washington took the series 4-0 for their 1st Cooperstown Chronicle Baseball League championship.

After the game, the victorious Senators manager told the secret to his team's great season and World Championship triumph, "The harder you work, the luckier you get," he said. "As far as I'm concerned, I'm the luckiest guy in the world today."

The new champions finished first in the regular season with a 99-55 record in the American League AL East.
