Monday, September 3rd, 1956: Hardy Peterson Suffers Injury
Hardy Peterson at first refused to leave today's Chicago (A)-Detroit game after he suffered a fractured eye socket while colliding with a player at a base. But his manager convinced him not to be foolish. "I'm a competitor," the feisty Detroit catcher said. "I'll play through just about anything." Given time to reflect on the situation, he knew it was in his best interest to get immediate treatment. The injury is expected to keep Peterson out of action for 2 months.

Peterson is swinging at a .269 pace on the year with 11 home runs, 65 RBIs and 62 runs scored. He has played in 120 games.
Friday, August 31st, 1956: Podres Dominates Detroit
Johnny Podres of the Kansas City Athletics gave the Tigers a steady diet of fine pitches and he walked off the mound with a complete game shutout. He blanked them 2-0 on 1 hit with a total of 6 strikeouts and 2 walks.

The Kansas City manager said, "Podres was on quite a roll. He gets great late movement and he doesn't give in to the hitters."

This season Podres has registered 8 wins and 9 losses in 28 starts with a 3.38 ERA.
Wednesday, August 29th, 1956: Tigers Shut Out Athletics
Gordon Jones pitched a strong game in blanking the Kansas City Athletics 6-0, allowed no runs on 2 hits, totaled 4 strikeouts and gave up 3 walks.

The Detroit manager said he could tell right away it was going to be a good game for Jones. "Right from the start, you could see how economical he was," he said. "He threw a lot of strikes."

This year Jones has posted a 10-7 mark in 26 starts and has a 3.13 ERA.
